Social Services
A certified social worker assists members to obtain benefits and entitlements and provides counseling and referrals to individuals and families. Special groups are provided for the bereaved and for those caring for spouses and relatives at home. There is also an award-winning program - 'Visionaries' - for those with special vision problems. Health Promotion Three days a week, a registered nurse provides individual and group health counseling, nutrition talks, blood pressure monitoring and educational programs to help members better maintain their health.Visionaries - a support group for Seniors with low vision, meets monthly. The group is lead by the nurse. Every Thursday morning, weather permitting, we have a walking group.
Transportation
Riverdale Senior Services also offers the innovative Tri-Center Transportation Program which arranges rides for eligible members to the senior centers. The program, which is sponsored by the New York City Department For The Aging, uses a 15 seater handicapped accessible van and provides more than 7,500 trips a year. The Rev. William A. Tieck Adult Day Activities Program This program is for seniors who are suffering from memory loss due to Alzheimer's Disease or related dementias. These seniors may need multiple services that cannot be provided by a regular senior center or other community agencies. During the course of the day the participants are offered a variety of activities that are physically and cognitively stimulating. Adult day care programs delay decline, provide respite for the caregiver, and helps families to maintain their loved ones in the community for a longer period of time with dignity and some measure of independence in their activities of daily living. A wide range of social and recreational activities are offered in addition to a hot lunch, snacks and transportation. The hours of operation are five days a week, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The program is open to seniors who are 60 years of age or older with memory loss, confusion and disorientation. Twice monthly a caregiver support group meets to assist families in coping with the adversities of memory loss. A registered nurse, a certified social worker, and three personal care aides staff the program. Our staff is highly trained and dedicated to maintaining the welfare and dignity of the participants. Donations Through your Will, you can make a significant contribution to the continuance of the programs and services at Riverdale Senior Services. Legacies received by RSS will become part of a special endowment fund and will generate additional income for use by RSS in providing services to Center members. We anticipate that such a fund will grow over the years and help insure stability for RSS in times of special financial need. Gifts to RSS by Will are simple to make, are not subject to New York or Federal estate tax and all such gifts will, of course, receive suitable recognition. You should discuss such a gift with your attorney. A gift in your Will, or in that of a family member, will insure a continuation of the services you and your friends receive from Riverdale Senior Services. Such a tangible expression of your thanks would mean a great deal to Riverdale Senior Services. A gift by Will serves as a living testimonial to your concern for the programs and services that Riverdale Senior Services provides for its members. |
